Medical Facilities

Karuna Cottage is not a medical facility. There is no medical staff or personal assistance provided for residents. It is, therefore, necessary for guests to be capable of self-care or to be accompanied by a carer/helper. This requirement also applies to a person who is confused or disoriented.

Telstra, Optus, Virgin mobile phone users will get reception on the property, there is no Vodaphone reception.

There are doctors, a chemist, a medical clinic and an ambulance service available in Nelly Bay:

Magnetic Island Health Service Center, telephone 07 4778 5107, 76 Sooning Street, Nelly Bay. Hours 9.00am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday (closed for lunch 1.00pm to 2.00pm), Saturdays until 1.00pm, closed Sundays and most public holidays. This is an accident and emegency center and medical emergencies take priority.
Magnetic Island Pharmacy, telephone 07 4778 5375, 3/55 Sooning Street, Nelly Bay. Open 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday, 9am to 1pm Saturday.
Ambulance service on the island runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. There is one paramedic on duty at any given time, except at changeover on Thursdays. They have to complete one call for help before they are able to go to the next.

There is helicopter transport to hospital, but if that is not available there is the ferry, with paramedics coming over from Townsville to take patients across. They work with the local doctors also.
